Staycation at InterContinental Nairobi

InterContinental Hotel, Nairobi is one of Kenya's most prestigious 5 star hotel built in May 1969. The hotel is situated right in the heart of Nairobi's central business district (CBD) along City Hall Way. While you are at the hotel you can clearly see a few places of interest like the KICC building ( Kenyatta International Conference Center), the Parliament building as well as the park ( Uhuru Park).

InterContinental hotel celebrated its 50th anniversary last month in May and I was honored to be part of the guests in attendance during the celebration at the hotel. I came to learn that the hotel was officially opened on 22nd May 1969 and let me tell you guys the hotel doesn't look 50 years old at all. The interior decor is still up to standards with the modern day style.

Cocktails at InterContinental Hotel back then had interesting names like Mount Kenya, Tsavo Sour, Big five cooler and Amboseli Swizzle and the prices were as low as 5/= shillings  and as high as 7/= shillings that must have been either affordable or expensive back in the 1960's. The Le Chateu menu in the 1970's had an array of dishes from grilled Molo lamb chops, grilled calves liver  to charcoal grilled Tiger prawns I wonder how those dishes tasted, they must have been delicious but I'm not sure if I would have tried the grilled calves liver. The menu also had Swahili sub titles which I think is pretty cool and that's one of the things I would like to see again in Kenyan hotels and restaurants.

Fast forward to 2019 and InterContinental Nairobi  has grown tremendously. The hotel has 326 rooms, 1 presidential Suite, 2 executive club suites, 4 deluxe suites, 7 superior suites, 36 club Intercontinental rooms, 97 deluxe rooms, 175 superior rooms, 2 wheelchair accessible rooms and 2 apartments.

There is  an Indian restaurant within the hotel Bhandini where they serve Indian dishes that are so delicious. Another restaurant within the hotel is the Terrace where International and local dishes are served. There is also an outdoor sports bar Makuti bar that's right next to the pool.

The staff at the hotel offer good customer service. The security at the hotel is really tight both within and outside the hotel.

My staycation highlights included the food at Bhandini was delicious, dinner and breakfast at The Terrace was just amazing.  My room was warm and cozy, my bed was so big and comfortable. The heated swimming pool was everything, I really didn't feel like leaving the pool.

I highly recommend InterContinental Nairobi whether you are looking for a staycation within the city or if you are in the country for Business or pleasure, you will definitely enjoy your stay like I did.

Thank you for stopping by!

  1. When you say "and let me tell you guys the hotel doesn't look a day over 50" it means that the hotel looks its age....not necessarily a great thing for a hotel!!!

    1. Thank you for pointing it out. I've rectified that. The hotel actually doesn't look its age as the interior decor, food and quality of service is still up to standard with the modern day.
